I couldn't help but be tickled by the fact that you used French and English as examples, seeing as I'm fluent in both. I can't tell you how many times I've had a word or phrase come to mind in one language and for the life of me not been able to think of how to say it in the other. Or found the equivalent word or phrase to seem a little flat. At least at home I can get around that by saying it in whichever language sounds better to me.<br/>Oh, and that last sentence is definitely making its way into my quote book. :) Ah, the joys of translation.
