I like my New King James version - I have a large study version, and then a small pocket edition. The only quibble with the study version is that some of the commentary may be from various views (such as end time interpretations) that I don't necessarily hold to, but that's okay.
Recently we bought an Archaeological Study Bible (NIV), and enjoy this as far as having more insight into the time periods. The included DVD for this is a little on the light side though.
My wife has an NIV student bible, which she enjoys. We can also recommend the Word of Promise New Testament Audio Book - Excellent voice work, sound effects, and really brings a unique perspective to the Bible.

I wasn't aware the NIV was up for replacement ... its still likely my preferred translation - the English is fairly clear, without being too contemporary (an approach which becomes dated quickly, in my opinion ... admittedly, I grew up with the KJV, so I'm somewhat biased). I own a TNIV (Today's New International Version) study Bible though, and it is quite good - similar wording, modernized a bit.
