To answer AlisonW's question, I don't know about the Chinese, but many French and Americans tend to have a fairly smug view of themselves (and yet the French manage to find all sorts of things about their country to complain about).

And SLA, I would definitely say the high number of abortions constitutes a massacre, but not everyone sees it that way. When people talk about massacres they tend to think of people who were born and killed later.

Incidentally Chris, I've seen the same sort of attitude towards sex that you described in the States too. Drives me nuts.

To answer your last question, I think the reason is that we somehow seem to notice negative things more easily than positive ones. I guess it's part of our fallen nature.

I'd agree wholeheartedly with Kirsty about the answer to your last question. Big Brother, however started in the Netherlands.

Don't a lot of nations feel superior to others? The French? The Chinese? The Americans? But perhaps in those countries you don't criticise your own -- too much like treason.

In your last post, you mentioned that there hadn't been a proper massacre in 400 some years? However, in the most recent you discuss the increasing number of abortions performed. What constitutes as a "massacre"?

"...why is it so much easier to say negative things about your country than positive ones?"
Because negativism is another British trait.
